Lumbini: The Sacred Cradle of Buddhism and the Legacy of Siddhartha Gautama
Welcome to the heart of Buddhism – Lumbini, the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama, who later became the Buddha and founded Buddhism. At our center’s headquarters in Lumbini, we are dedicated to preserving the rich heritage of Buddhism and fostering its growth worldwide.

Lumbini, located in present-day Nepal, holds profound significance in Buddhist history. It was here, over 2,600 years ago, that Queen Maya Devi gave birth to Siddhartha Gautama under the shade of an sacred fig tree in the serene Mayadevi Garden. This event marked the beginning of a spiritual journey that would transform the world. As a child, Siddhartha Gautama lived a life of privilege and comfort. However, after encountering the realities of suffering, sickness, aging, and death, he embarked on a quest for truth and enlightenment. At the age of 29, he left his palace and royal life behind to seek a path beyond suffering.
After years of ascetic practice and meditation, Siddhartha attained enlightenment under the Bodhi tree at Bodh Gaya. He then shared his insights and teachings across the Indian subcontinent, laying the foundation for Buddhism. Lumbini stands as a testament to this spiritual journey, attracting millions of Buddhist pilgrims and visitors from around the world every year.
Blue毗尼 International Buddhist Research Center is headquartered in the birthplace of Buddhism – Lumbini. This location holds profound historical and religious significance. The center serves as a global hub for Buddhist studies, research, cultural exchange, and practice, bringing together Buddhist scholars, practitioners, and enthusiasts from across the globe.
The center’s establishment in Lumbini is supported by the Nepalese government. The Deputy Prime Minister of Nepal and the Minister of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation are actively involved in providing government support. The government’s backing is crucial for the development of Lumbini, helping to create a favorable environment for its growth.
The Lumbini International Buddhist Research Center has established a close and friendly relationship with the Sakya family, the descendants of the Buddha. The Sakya family has always been deeply involved in Buddhist affairs and holds significant influence within the Buddhist community.
The center has been working closely with the Sakya family to jointly promote Buddhist culture and heritage. In the future, the center plans to invite members of the Sakya family to visit its headquarters in Lumbini and participate in various Buddhist activities. This will help to strengthen the ties between the center and the Sakya family and further enhance the center’s influence within the Buddhist community.
The center regularly organizes various Buddhist activities and events, such as academic conferences, seminars, meditation retreats, and cultural exchange programs. These activities provide a platform for Buddhist practitioners and researchers to share their experiences, knowledge, and insights, promoting the exchange and development of Buddhist culture.
In addition to these activities, the center also plans to organize large-scale Buddhist ceremonies in Lumbini. These ceremonies will bring together Buddhist monks, nuns, and lay practitioners from China and around the world to participate in this spiritual gathering. The center will provide assistance and support to help Chinese Buddhist monks and nuns obtain the necessary travel documents and visas to attend these events.
The center has established a mediation practice facility in Lumbini with tens of thousands of butter lamps. In the future, it plans to expand this to hundreds of thousands of butter lamps. This facility provides a serene and sacred space for Buddhist practitioners to engage in meditation and prayer. The butter lamp practice holds deep spiritual significance in Buddhism. It symbolizes the dispelling of ignorance and the illumination of wisdom, creating a peaceful and meditative atmosphere. Practitioners can dedicate butter lamps to express their devotion and prayers.
